Pat McGowan on Marriage Equality
In 2009, Maine took a big step in terms of social equality with the passage of LD 1020, An Act to End Discrimination in Civil Marriage and Affirm Religious Freedom. The governor signed this bill, which legalized gay marriage in Maine. Pat McGowan supported this legislation and supported the governor’s decision to sign the bill.
Later in the year, the people of Maine overturned the law through a People’s Veto.
Should the bill be introduced again and pass through the Maine House of Representatives and Senate, Pat pledges to sign the bill into law once again. Should the legislation find its way on to the ballot once again, Pat would explain to Maine citizens why he supports gay marriage – he believes that every Maine citizen should be granted the same rights and the same liberties. Every man, woman, and child should be treated fairly and equally, no matter what personal feelings or religious beliefs they may hold.
People’s opinions are constantly evolving and changing with the times. What some voters feel one year might change the next year. The expression of the voter is the ultimate decision in every democracy and it should not be taken lightly. Social issues are deeply personal issues for many people. But as Governor, Pat feels that it is important to represent every citizen in the state, and intends to do so if elected to lead this state.
