McGowan Receives Endorsement from Three More Newspapers

York County Coast Star, York Weekly and Portsmouth Herald Join Maine Today Media Newspapers in Endorsing McGowan as Democratic Nominee for Governor

(HALLOWELL) –Patrick McGowan today received the endorsement as the Democratic nominee for governor from the York Weekly, the York County Coast Star, and the Portsmouth Herald.  The three newspapers join the Portland Press Herald, Kennebec Journal, and Morning Sentinel in endorsing McGowan for the June 8th Democratic primary.

“There are a lot of undecided voters with less than a week to go,” McGowan said.  “I am happy to see that when editorial boards take the time to talk with every candidate in depth about several issues, they agree that my plan and my 2020 Vision for Maine’s Future will set the right direction for our state.  We still have a lot of work to do before Tuesday, but these endorsements are important because they give Democratic voters a blueprint for what issues are important to our state and who has the best plan to address those issues. I am honored by these endorsements and would like to thank all six newspapers for their support.”

The York Weekly, York County Coast Star, and Portsmouth Herald pointed to McGowan’s “breadth of experience” as a reason for endorsing his campaign.  The newspapers say that business attraction and retention will be an important job for the next governor, and McGowan’s experience as a Regional Administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration make him an ideal candidate to perform that task.   “We believe he will be a strong advocate for the business community — a refreshing change of pace from the anti-business label that has been pasted on the Democratic Party in recent years,” the newspapers said in the endorsement.

The three newspapers also credit McGowan for helping to shape Maine’s energy policy during his seven-year tenure as Maine’s Conservation Commissioner.  “He understands the possibilities and limits of biomass, wind and solar, and believes the state is in a perfect position to chart a future energy course that is renewable and cost-effective,” the newspapers stated.

The endorsement says that McGowan understands the connection between a healthy business and a sustainable business.  The papers credit McGowan for “saying paper mills can produce ‘green’ material, coming from certified ‘green’ forests, so ‘old jobs become new, green jobs.’”  The newspapers added, “We like his thinking.”

The three newspapers, which serve southern York County, also point out that McGowan is a former resident of York, understanding the local issues in a unique way.  “There would be someone in the Blaine House who doesn’t consider southern York County part of New Hampshire,” the newspapers said.

This is the second round of newspaper endorsements McGowan has received in three days.  McGowan says it is indicative of the same momentum he is seeing while campaigning on the ground.

“When we start talking about issues, people like the ideas of my campaign and they like our vision,” McGowan said.  “We feel the momentum every day on the campaign trail. People want change, but they want someone with experience who knows how to make a change. Candidates can talk all they want about wanting to add jobs or cut government, but without a plan it’s just talk.  I have the plan, the vision, and the experience, and that’s what makes me a different type of candidate.”
