A Memorial Day message from Pat McGowan

Today is Memorial Day.  It is a day that is easily thought of as the “unofficial start of summer” – especially for businesses that rely heavily on the tourism industry here in Maine.

But, as you use this day off to cook on the grill, do a little extra yard work, get together with friends, or relax a little bit – or, even if you are working today – please remember to take some time to remember why the holiday exists in the first place.

Memorial Day is a day set aside to honor the men and women who have died while serving our country in the military.  Maine's Gold Star Honor Roll remembers those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.  Since 2001, Maine has lost 43 heroes who died while serving their country in support of combat operations.   Every Maine citizen has a connection to these brave individuals and those that have passed in wars before.  These are our family, friends, neighbors and co-workers.  They are our community.

While much has changed in this day and age, there are many things that have remained the same.  Some 65 years ago, while we were in the midst of World War II, Gen. George S. Patton was giving a speech in Boston.  He said, “It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died.  Rather we should thank God that such men lived.”

Gen. Patton was correct.  We have brave men and women currently serving our country in very dangerous parts of the world, fighting every day for our liberties and our freedom.  They are spending months or years away from home and family to protect our rights and our country.

The State of Maine should be proud of the work that is being done by our service members, both overseas and here at home.  And while today is a day off for many Mainers – a day that is commonly used to start thinking about the days of summer that will soon be upon us – be sure to take time to remember our fallen soldiers, to remember our soldiers currently serving our country, to remember our veterans, and to remember the families of service members past and present.  Thank them for their service and sacrifice, and be thankful that such bravery and honor exists in our country.

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day.
